Spring Preview: Quarterbacks
Updated: Mar 1
Starting today, on the first day of spring practice, we will be taking you through the position groups and introducing you to the roster. Who is ready for some football!
First group to preview: Quarterbacks
UAB has 6 Quarterbacks listed on the roster heading into spring training. Three have Division One starts under their belts(Jacob Zeno, Dylan Hopkins, and Bryson Lucero) while the other three are Sophomores and Freshmen. (Harrison Barker, Dylan Mehrotra, and Damon Stewart) Tallest Quarterback listed is Zeno at 6'4". Farthest away from home is Lucero as he calls Colorado home. Closest to home goes to Barker as he hails from Hoover Alabama. Lets take a quick look at all the Quarterbacks.
Dylan Hopkins #9 - 6'2" 215lbs - Redshirt Senior
The first player we are gonna take a look at is your very own QB1, Dylan Hopkins. The Maryville, Tennessee native took control of the offense full time after a few games last year and showed why he was once a finalist for Mr. Football in the state of Tennessee. Dylan threw the ball for 2,274 yards and 18 touchdowns. He was one of the top quarterbacks in the country in regards to efficiency completing 155 of his 235 pass attempts. Hopkins showed he could also run when needed securing 5 touchdowns with his feet. The biggest news regarding Hopkins heading into the spring is he will miss spring practice due to shoulder surgery on his non throwing shoulder. This will give one of the other quarterbacks on the roster a chance to shine and challenge for that QB1 job.
Harrison Barker #8 - 5'11" 200lbs - Redshirt Freshmen
If you are from the state of Alabama than the name Barker is probably well known to you. Harrison has carved out a name for himself after an impressive Senior season at Spain Park High School throwing for 2,946 yards which ranks 14th in passing in the state of Alabama for a single season. Harrison was a gun slinger but had a great feel for the pocket and when he needs to can run the ball well. Harrison has shown these abilities in past spring games mixed with a few interceptions. Harrison Redshirted in 2020 and did not see the field in 2021.
Jacob Zeno #4 - 6'4" 215lbs - Redshirt Junior
Jacob Zeno comes in as one of the highest rated players to attend UAB in recent history. The San Antonio native was recruited by anyone and everyone out of high school. He chose Baylor where he has spent the last 3 years. Zeno has played in a Big 12 championship game and has numerous starts for the Baylor Bears. He is a big, pocket style quarterback but he does have the ability to run the ball. Bryson Lucero #12 - 6'1" 215lbs - Redshirt Junior
Two years ago Bryson found himself in a tough position as he was called upon to lead The Blazers after both QB1 and QB2 went down to injury. Bryson showed perfectly the meaning of, "If you stay ready, you never have to get ready." Lucero stepped in against South Alabama for his first college start and threw for 319 yards on 18 of 28 passing, for 2 touchdowns as he led the Blazers to a blowout of the Jags. Bryson has appeared in 9 games total as a Blazer and has accounted for 7 touchdowns in his career. Coming into this season with his experience in the offense and his monster arm expect him to be right in the thick of the QB1 battle.
Dylan Mehrotra #15 - 6'3" 190lbs - Redshirt Freshmen
One of the more intriguing Quarterbacks we have on the roster to me is definitely Redshirt Freshmen Dylan Mehrotra. The Baton Rouge native comes to UAB from Episcopal High School. Dylan has some speed and agility, with great awareness. He has a solid arm and if you follow him on social media you will have seen him continuing to hone his skills as a quarterback. I am going to go out on a limb and say he will be a dark horse competitor for the back up roll as quarterback. Having seen his film and seen his grind its hard not to root for him.
Damon Stewart #17 - 6'1" 170lbs - Redshirt Sophomore
If you are looking for an athlete that could not only compete as a quarterback but could compete for several other positions on the team than look no further than Damon Stewart. The dual threat quarterback comes to us from East Mississippi CC. Damon has some impressive field presence when he starts to run the ball and can make a defensive player miss in a phone booth. Where he does lack is his arm strength but he more than makes up for it in speed and ability to make the big play. For a more complete bio on Damon make sure to check out the link on an article we did about him. https://www.southsidedragonrpt.com/post/know-your-blazer-damon-isaiah-stewart
The Quarterback room this season heading into spring is stacked with young inexperienced players and experienced guys who have seen the field. Also it is wild to think we will be going into the season for the first time since the Return without Tyler Johnstone III on the sideline. Where this group ends up on the depth chart looks to be one of the best battles to watch heading into the new season. Who is gonna take advantage of Hopkins being sidelined during the spring and show out? Will we see one of the returning quarterbacks step up or will some of the new guys make some noise? Will Vincent and Clark stay true to form and play 2 quarterbacks? For now this is Dylan Hopkins offense, but don't think for a second this will not be a tough decision for the coaches when September 1st rolls around.
