Spring Preview: Offensive Lineman

We give a lot of credit to the running backs and quarterbacks for the amazing things they do. Let us not forget that without this group, none of those amazing things would be possible.

Next up for preview: Offensive Line

UAB has 18 offensive lineman listed on the spring roster. Of that group six are seniors, three are juniors, three are sophomores, and six are freshmen. Ten of those players have seen action for the Blazers. The tallest offensive lineman is Kadeem Telfort and Keshawn Moore who both stand at a towering 6'8". The farthest away from home is Kadeem Telfort who calls Miami, Florida home. Closest to home is Cameron Young from Birmingham, Alabama. Lets look at the group that paves the way for our offense.

#62 Sidney Wells - 6'4" 330lbs - Redshirt Senior

Welcome back Sidney Wells! It was unsure if Sidney was going to be able to get a medical redshirt to play this season. Those worries were washed away when his name showed up on the spring roster. Sidney has played in and started all 27 games as a Blazer and was an Outland Trophy Preseason selection in 2021. The expectation is he will be one of the five starters going into this upcoming season as well as a leader on the line. Look for Sidney to hold down one of the tackle spots.

#77 Kadeem Telfort - 6'8" 335lbs - Redshirt Senior

Kadeem Telfort will return to the Southside for his third year. Telfort has played in 19 games as a Blazer with 17 of those as a starter. The mountainous lineman was a Conference USA Honorable Mention in 2021. It is easy to see him getting first team honors this season in CUSA. He will anchor the other tackle spot. Telfort has all the tools to not only be one of the best lineman in this conference, but to be a sleeper pick for an NFL team. You can not teach size and that is something that Telfort has. Mix that with his abilities to protect and pancake, this should be another great year for the Miami native.

#61 Matthew Trehern - 6'3" 305lbs - Redshirt Senior

Another staple on the offensive line for the last few years is Senior Matthew Trehern. Trehern has been a two-time CUSA Honorable Mention and has played and started in 22 games as a Blazer. Trehern will anchor one side of the center at the guard position. It was thought at one point that Trehern would end up closer to home playing for South Alabama but we have sure been glad to have the Saraland High School alum. Trehern has been consistent and trustworthy for the Blazers. Look for more big things from Trehern and this line in 2022.

#75 Will Rykard - 6'2" 305lbs - Redshirt Junior

Having shared the center roll with Andrew Smith Jr. for a few years, Will Rykard will likely come into this season as the starter. Andrew Smith Jr. has graduated leaving the center job completely to Rykard. Will has played in 14 games with 9 starts as a Blazer. Rykard is easily one of the best centers in this conference and should garner some pre-season recognition. If he does not than people just are not paying attention.

#66 Quincy McGee - 6'4" 320lbs - Redshirt Senior

One player that will look to slot in to the open guard spot will be Quincy McGee. Quincy came in last season and played in 5 games. The Mississippi kid was once thought to be heading to Ole Miss out of high school. Instead he went JUCO to Mississippi Gulf Coast CC which is where UAB found him. Can he do what is needed to garner a starting roll?

#71 Quez Yates - 6'6" 315lbs - Senior

Quez comes to UAB from Jones College in Mississippi. He has won multiple awards on the JUCO level and is regarded as someone with "heavy hands." Meaning, once he has them on you in run or pass blocking you are not getting away from him. He is a JUCO All American and will be a factor. He will push those who are starting and those behind them. As long as he cleans up some technique you should see him gain playing time this season.

#79 Trey Bedosky - 6'6" 285lbs - Redshirt Sophomore

Trey Bedosky will try to build off what was a very successful 2021. Bedosky appeared in 12 games for the Blazers and earned a spot on the CUSA All-Freshman Team. Look for Trey to be in the rotation for the line but also in the jumbo packages that Vincent likes to run.

#67 Nathaniel "Tater" Reid - 6'4" 280lbs - Senior

Someone who is looking to garner an immediate spot on the line is Tater Reid. He comes to UAB via Coffeyville CC. Tater was highly recruited out of JUCO. Look for him to make an impact and challenge for the open guard spot on this offensive line.

#72 Brady Wilson - 6'2" 305lbs - Redshirt Sophomore

The pipeline continues from Spanish Fort with Brady Wilson. Brady played in 2 games last season. In high school Brady was first team All-State 6A in Alabama. Look for Brady to jump in to the rotation.

#54 Zaire Flournoy - 6'3" 300lbs - Redshirt Sophomore

Zaire played in one game last season as a Blazer. He was recruited out of high school as a defensive tackle but has returned to his more natural position on the offensive line.

#76 Eli Richey - 6'5" 295lbs - Redshirt Freshman

Eli was a nice get for UAB after his de-commitment from Georgia Tech. Eli played in 3 games last season for the Blazers as a true-freshman. Eli, like so many of our other lineman, will definitely be seeing the field this season.

#65 Chase Perry - 6'2" 280lbs - Redshirt Freshman

Chase Perry was a stand-out at Helena High School (AL). He appeared in one game last season and will look to get more chances in 2022.

#52 Cameron Young - 6'1" 300lbs - Redshirt Junior

Spain Park High School (AL) - Has not played in a game.

#63 Keshawn Moore - 6'8" 350lbs - Redshirt Junior

Central Cleveland HS Mississippi - Has not played in a game.

#70 C.J. Williams - 6'3" 320lbs - Freshman

Springville High School (AL) - New to the Southside - HS Wrestler

#60 Therion Cannon - 6'3" 265lbs - Redshirt Freshman

Thomas Heyward High School (SC) - Has not played a game

#68 Adam Lepkowski - 6'2" 280lbs - Redshirt Freshman

Hoover High School (AL) - Has not played in a game.

#69 Brett Johnson - 6'4" 285lbs - Redshirt Freshman

Isabella High School (AL) - Has not played in a game.

Ryan Gunter - 6'5" 300lbs

Hewitt Trussville High School (AL) standout is expected to join the team in the summer. Originally committed to Liberty University.

Luke Jones - 6'4" 295lbs

Lanier High School (GA). Played center and tackle his senior year. Very versatile. Expected to join the team in the summer.

Once again the offensive line for the Blazers looks to be a strength with a lot of experience returning. We also have young players that have had thier share of playing time. Four of the starters we are predicting helped account for 2,737 rushing yards last season. I would expect much of the same in 2022. Replacing Colby Ragland will be a monumental task as he was not only a great player but one of the leaders on the team and offense. But, I expect Sidney Wells to step into that roll left open. So the question is, who will start on the line for the Blazers in 2022? Give me Sidney Wells at right tackle and Telfort opposite him at left tackle. Trehern will hold down the right guard while Rykard will take care of the snaps at center. The left guard spot is going to be a tough battle this spring. It is anyone's guess who will get the start there. I'm not even going to try to throw out a guess. One thing for sure is this will be a tough group that will make a lot of defenses look silly. With this group I expect our running backs to have another banner year. Hope those defenses have pulled those chin straps tight!
