Big Weekend for Blazer Athletics!

(Times above for Basketball, Softball, and Baseball are all for Saturday February 19th)

If you are a sports fan and are looking for something to do this weekend than UAB Sports has you covered! Baseball, Men's Basketball, Softball, and Track and Field all have big events going on. Starting tomorrow at 9am running through Sunday you can find some sort of sport with a Blazer participating.

Men's Basketball Vs North Texas

The UAB Men's Basketball team looks to continue the momentum gained from their thrashing of Rice on Thursday night. The weather outside was terrible and the tornadoes did not help attendance but those that were there got to see one of the more complete offensive games from Andy Kennedy's squad. 21 assist on 40 made field goals is the best assist output for the team this year. UAB won the game 92-68. KJ Buffin and Jordan "Jelly" Walker had double doubles while Quan Jackson led the way with 21 points. KJ Buffin also got his 1,000 career point on a monster dunk. This team now has 6 players with 1,000+ career points. Attention now turns to the Mean Green of North Texas. This game marks the first time since 2005 (shoutout Charmillionaire) that two CUSA teams ranking inside the top 50 in most major metrics will face off. This game is being dubbed a "White Out" game as the first 4,500 fans through the door will receive a FREE Steal Mill t-shirt. North Texas comes into this game winners of the last 11 games. They are 12-1 in CUSA games this year and are 2 games ahead of the Blazers in the standings. The lone loss on their schedule came at the hands of UAB in Denton. North Texas will come in looking to revenge that loss. The game tips at 3pm and doors open at 2pm. Come early and be loud! Need a great crowd for what is sure to be a great game!

Baseball vs Northwestern

The UAB Baseball team started the season off in dramatic fashion Friday against the Wildcats from Northwestern. Peyton Puckett got the walk-off base hit to bring in 2 runs in the bottom of the 9th inning to get the 8-7 victory. Carson Myers (Freshmen) picked up his first win of the year coming in relief of the starter Jackson Reynolds. The Blazers started the game off hot scoring 3 runs in the first inning. But errors throughout the game left the Blazers in precarious position going into the 9th inning down 7-6. The Blazers loaded up the bases putting all the pressure on the Wildcats pitching to close the game out, but Puckett could not be denied. The Blazers and Wildcats continue the series Saturday from Young Memorial Field with a double header. The first game Saturday starts at 1pm with the second game to follow shortly after that one ends. The two teams close out the series on Sunday at 1pm.

Softball Host the Blazer Classic

The annual Blazer Classic started off strong for the UAB softball team. The Blazers played two games on Friday afternoon and won both games. The first game the Blazers played the Toledo Rockets. UAB had great hitting and pitching throughout the contest blanking the Rockets 8-0. The Blazers started the game with 3 runs in the first inning. In the 2nd inning of the game Lilly Crowe smashed one over the outfield fence to give the Blazers a 6-0 lead. Sarah Cespedes got the win pitching 3 innings giving up no runs. The night cap saw the Blazers face off with the North Dakota Fighting Hawks. Makenna Pierce got the start for the Blazers and went the full distance. Pierce pitched 7 innings only giving up 2 hits while striking out 8. The game remained a pitching duel until the 4th inning when right fielder Tyler Armistead hit a solo homerun to left field. The Blazers held on to the 1-0 lead to take the win. The UAB Softball team will play in two more games Saturday at Mary Bowers Field. Game one is at 3pm in a rematch against the Fighting Hawks of North Dakota and game two will follow at 5:30pm against The Murray State Racers. The Blazer Classic will end on Sunday for the UAB Softball team with a rematch against the Racers at 12:30pm. If you love softball the Blazer Classic starts at 10am and runs through 12:30pm on Sunday. Make sure to get out there and catch a game!

UAB Track and Field Host the CUSA Championships at the Birmingham Crossplex

For the 11th year UAB will host the CUSA Track and Field Championships at the Birmingham Crossplex. Coach Kurt Thomas looks for the ladies to close out the indoor season strong, and if recent success is any indicator than the Blazers look to be in great form leading into the Championship this weekend. UAB has had three school records set in the last two weeks with even more personal records being broken. The heptathlon starts the weekend off at 9am Saturday morning with action throughout the rest of the day. Championship Sunday starts at 8:30am again with the heptathlon. Awards and championships presentation will be around 3:30pm Sunday. If you have not had a chance to see the ladies compete this year this is a great chance to do so. Also the Birmingham Crossplex is an incredible facility to take in all the excitement of track and field.

Even though the weather Thursday night was as bad as it gets around here with tornados, flooding, and high winds, the weather this weekend looks to be outstanding! Starting Saturday morning running through Sunday afternoon you can catch all manners of UAB athletics. Catch a foul ball, watch the mile run, or cheer for dunks and three's! Which ever you decide to do cheer loud and remember, #WinAsOne and Go Blazers!
